Why Do Women Yak About Self Care And Men Just Do It?

ledelstein2

Women talk about self care, a term I hate, and what do they do? Maybe they get a massage, take a few hours off, sit in the tub - then they apologize for it. Or feel guilty, or both. Or ask for absolution from a friend. Do men apologize for sitting in front of the TV for eight hours watching other men slam into each other? No. Do men apologize for going to relax? No.

Think about it. Can you tell me the last time your husband, male partner, colleague, son, friend, whomever, turned to you and seriously asked, “Is it okay with you if I go for a bike ride?” or  “I'm beat. If it works for you, I'm going to read a book." And then, returning from the bike ride, nap, bar, said, “I’m sorry if I inconvenienced you,” before plopping down on the couch with the clicker in his hand. “Any chips?”

No. He needed to rest so he rested, he wanted to read, so he picked up a book; dishes remained in the sink.

I am not saying that women need to ask permission or keep score or torment each other with stories of personal sacrifice. I’m not even saying that men know how to take care of themselves better than women or that they are skilled at it. After all, we still live longer.

I’m saying that men just do it (is that Nike or Adidas? certainly not Dr. Scholls) without guilt and without apology. Why do we apologize for the simple act of taking care of ourselves? Add that to your New Year’s Resolutions: No apologies. There is plenty of room to add 'no apologies' to the New Year's List; you probably broke the other ones already.
