I’m not going to get political – I promise. At least not political in the Red or Blue sense of things, but I have stayed up late for 4 nights to watch the Democratic National Convention (there’s a first time for everything), and I’m left (pun intended) with one overriding thought.
I listened to most of the speakers – some were boring, many were predictable, and a few were brilliant. But, woven through most of the speeches was a call for decency and basic respect for one another. I don’t know if these people meant it or if they live it. I don’t really care. I think they were reflecting a collective hope. It left me thinking that decency has a chance to make a comeback.
Did you ever watch the tape of Joe Welch confronting Joseph McCarthy? It marked a turning point in McCarthy’s reign of terror, and Welch knew exactly what he was doing. He knew who he was dealing with; he was ready. The preparedness doesn’t make the takedown less masterful. Watch it here; it is worth your time. I’ll be back next week with more silly ideas and stories about aging, but I wanted to pause to acknowledge a flickering candle in the dark. https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/joseph-mccarthy-meets-his-match
