I knew It

ledelstein2

I’m a sucker for all those end-of-the-year lists. It doesn’t matter what the list is – movies, music, dead people; it’s all interesting. I learned something new this year.

The Daily, the podcast from the NYT is a reliable (approx.) 23 minutes of sanity for me. Recently, the host, Michael Barbaro, asked several colleagues to share their advice for living well. Here is my summary of what they said:

1.    Listen, really listen

2.    Incorporate more joy in daily life

3.    Find comfort in people who know you well (they said ‘old mentors’ but all I have is tormentors)

4.    Don’t chew ice

5.    Throw stuff away; don’t clutter

6.    Collect moments of moral beauty (author D. Keltner) https://www.amazon.com/Books-Dacher-Keltner

7.    Be resilient, keep going

So….What did I learn? First, I learned that I already knew this stuff, even the tip about ice.

I’ve lived a long time, and I’ve learned a lot – mostly the hard way. But more importantly, second, I learned that although I know all this – I DON’T DO IT. I don’t need more tips, tricks, whatever. I need to use all the important and ridiculous information that I’ve collected over the years and, if you are anywhere close to my elderly being, I’ll bet you know it all, too.

It's a pretty good list, though, of things most of us forget routinely. So maybe the point of The Daily folks is that we have to re-learn those skills (and oh, god, practice them?), daily. Anyway, happy 2025,old friend. We have to be glad for each one we get... Ever onward, m
