This is a legit Valentine Post. Stick with me….
I promised Maddy that, if she could live with my rants, I would not get political in my blog kvetching. I will stick to that promise. However, it seems neutral to acknowledge we all knew that, after the election, whatever the results, many people were going to be miserable. Well, I’m in the miserable group – it’s not the first time.
But this is a Valentine’s Day post…not about what is going wrong, but about what is going (might be going, could be going) right. As usual, the book forces its way into my post. Once the authors went public and sent out emails about Not The Trip We Planned, strange, small, wonderful things happened. They received congratulations from old friends; they heard from high school classmates; even a couple of grade school classmates whose grandchildren probably monitored their email; they received invites to speak to book groups; and people passed along the email to their friends and church groups…. What I’m trying to say is that people were remarkably kind. And generous. It shouldn’t surprise me, but it did. It really did.
I cringe at cliches, but maybe the answer lies in small, ordinary kind words and deeds toward each other. Gentleness seems so meager and insignificant in an ocean of cruelty, but this week, it’s my micro-dose of hope.
Happy Valentine’s Day
