Vote

I’ll walk over to my polling place after work. I’ve always voted (I also always brush my teeth) but when I was young, I don’t think I had any idea of the importance of my right to vote, not to mention the life changing benefits of flossing. This year, it may come down to three thoughtful people we don’t know who live in a small town in Nebraska.

Sure, I sat through history and maybe I can still tell you most of the Presidents (not in order), and one year in grade school, we had to memorize the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence, and each of us (30 stammering New Jersey children) recited it in class. That was a rip roaring day, for sure. What were the teachers thinking?

There has been a lot of voting, and a lot of flossing since then. I wonder if, instead of memorization and lectures, it would have been more effective if the teacher offered us two treats and had the class vote on which one to choose – Necco Wafers or Tootsie Rolls.  Then the teacher threw out certain kid’s votes because they were sitting on the left side of the classroom or disqualified others because they were wearing blue sweaters, or they folded their ballots incorrectly. What a powerful lesson about the right to vote, and the responsibility.

I imagine that the class discussion/uproar would have been illuminating. More importantly, I suspect many of us would remember that class than can still repeat the Preamble.

Please vote - or I'll come to your home and stand outside your window and recite the Preamble to the Declaration of Independence.

Yes very true— children have such a strong sense of justice— applied to voting at a young age would help a lot. Let’s hope the teachers reading this take it to heart. Thanks Chickie! This was a good one.
